The Vallalta Trail is the “agile” distance of the 100% Mojanchi Trail: a 13 km loop with 950 m D+ that packs nature, scenery, history and fun into a compact and runnable course (with tough climbs). Perfect for those who want the essence of mountain running without giving up spectacular sections.

Start and finish are in Mesenzana (VA). The route crosses the open trenches of Cassano Valcuvia and the tunnel sections of the Mesenzana trenches (recently restored by the local administration). You will also run on the ancient Mojanchi road (which gives our event its name) and through the old Celtic village of Cavojasca.

Vallalta Trail Valcuvia Valtravaglia

Vallalta Trail – 13 km – 950 D+ - Course description

Start of the race from the trail village located in front of the Mesenzana Town Hall. After a short warm-up section through the village, the route turns right. The first climb begins on a short stretch of cobblestones and asphalt, then enters the forest above the town. Passage near the Madonnina degli ammalati (water point at km 2) and then the Cà de Roc area, before starting the descent on paved road leading to Cassano Valcuvia.

After crossing the village, runners enter the trail leading to the historic open trenches of Cassano Valcuvia. Here, a headlamp is mandatory. Exiting the trenches, the climb continues through dense beech forests, alternating runnable sections with steeper ramps. Reaching the Sasso Bianco area, a sharp left turn marks the final steep ascent toward Vallalta, first on a technical rocky section and then on a single track opening to the left onto a beautiful view of the green Valcuvia.

At Vallalta (km 8.5) you’ll find the only aid station of the race. After the aid station, the course continues downhill through the stunning Mesenzana trenches, a place of high historical value, where World War I machine-gun positions are still clearly visible.

Passage through the two tunnels (headlamp mandatory) and, once out, the route tackles the final ramp to the mule track connecting Vallalta to San Michele. Only a few hundred meters separate you from the last descent. Following the Mojanchi road and passing the ruins of the ancient Celtic settlement of Cavojasca, you’ll run the final section before reaching Mesenzana.

To everyone’s delight, there’s one last climb to reach the medieval tower, then a fast downhill through the village to the finish line, where you’ll find the final refreshment and a finisher medal to celebrate your achievement.
